A time for traditions.
Soaking up the holiday season.
Growing up in Denmark, the holiday season always went by in a flash—with families putting up trees on Christmas Eve and taking down their decorations as soon as the new year had passed. As you might imagine, the American approach to the holidays—which essentially starts anytime after Halloween!—feels downright luxurious, and I enjoy the opportunity to make the most of this festive season.
Since my kids have been little, a particular tradition I’ve cherished is letting each one of them pick a new ornament for the tree. Over time, we’ve developed quite an eccentric collection of decorations, and it’s a wonderful walk down memory lane to revisit them each year. With my son, Oli, I’ve also leaned into sillier traditions like matching pajamas—rediscovering my own inner child through his eyes.
But of course, you’re probably wondering what I’m cooking, which is a Christmas Eve feast. In addition to George, my children and their partners, we’ve had the good fortune to regularly include several friends that feel like family. But while I love hosting this larger group, the food tradition I crave most is actually a rustic stuffed cabbage that I make for my immediate family on Christmas Day. There’s just something about the total lack of responsibility—eating cookies for breakfast, wearing cozy clothes all day—that makes this humble Christmas ritual all the more special.
As for what we’ll be serving in the shop, guests can expect a few special sweets and additions to our homemade pantry items. In particular, you can look for knotted cardamom buns and decadent semla—a cardamom- and marzipan-laced cream bun. Traditionally served for Christmas and Fat Tuesday, respectively, these Nordic treats have become shop favorites for any celebration.
