To be loved.

As a person who is such a doer—an entrepreneur and a single mom—I’ve always struggled with allowing other people to take care of me. But earlier this year, during a two-week recovery from a medical procedure, I had the unusual experience of being forced to stay in one place, slow down and trust that both my family and our team at the shop had everything under control.

Having endless hours of quiet time for observation and reflection was, to say the least, a radical shift. It allowed me to take stock of all the incredible things my body does for me—without even realizing it—as well as how my constant doing leaves little space for other people to show their love. Simply having someone else cook for me, light a candle or bring me a blanket felt like such unprecedented luxury, and it gave me a new sense of appreciation for the people who consistently check in and always show up.

Months later, I find myself thinking about the holidays as a season that invites us to honor and celebrate our loved ones. Whether I’m picking out a gift for a specific friend or imagining how guests will respond to the products in our shop, I’m not simply striving for practicality or quality. My bar is much higher: a feeling of they would absolutely LOVE this.
